Contact Immersion: a two day contact improvisation dance workshop
Contact Improvisation is a playful, supportive and creative dance form that involves physical contact with other dancers, including rolling, leaning, lifting, and supporting weight. You’ll learn how to safely give and receive weight, and flow into a dance where both of you are leading and following simultaneously. Sometimes described as a cross between martial arts, surfing, dancing and massage, it teaches skills of listening and being deeply present in the moment.
In this workshop we will take inspiration from the exhibition currently showing in the room, ‘And they are Seeing You: The Gaze of an Alive World’ featuring images of water creatures including seals and fish – excellent teachers of play and flow.
Over the two days there will be a variety of classes and jam sessions facilitated by a number of contact improvisation teachers. These will include both sessions with music and with silence.
Some activities will take place outside on the grass and (weather permitting) swimming in the adjacent Yarra River – the dance hall is next to an excellent and deep swimming hole, so bring bathers and towel. For dancing, it’s recommended to wear comfortable long sleeves and pants or leggings – avoid zips or buttons.
For accommodation, there is a caravan park for riverside camping ten minutes walk away, and plenty of AirBnB’s. For public transport, there is a bus from Lilydale station that stops right outside the venue which runs every hour.
